The Martian Rover Roof

The story follows an american astronaut mark watney as he becomes stranded alone on mars in 2035 and must improvise in order to survive. But they include the section of him removing a chunk of the rover s wall and roof and patching it up. In the film this sequence is not present. So in the film there was no reason for mark to cut into the roof of his sole rover. In the film what suspenseful story was made of rover 1 was condensed down to a unpressurized trailer complete with a powered crane that the book s mark wished he had in getting pathfinder and other heavy objects moved about which strained his back considerably. The trailer s inflated roof miraculously did not pop. He drilled holes into the top and put a balloon in it in order to make the right conditions for the oxygenator and to make it bigger. To fit the equipment in the rover he removes a portion of a wall and integrates the equipment into the rover and seals it up using some of the material from a pop tent a piece of equipment in the books. It was modified significantly to fit the oxygenator the water making machine and all his food.

The only reason watney needed to drill out the roof was so the hab equipment would fit in rover 2. Because the writer was lazy and for the sake of budget they trashed rover 2 instead of turning it into a trailer. Crown publishing purchased the rights and re released it in 2014. Some of the solar cells are trapped under the rover but watney collects the rest and sets them up to charge the batteries.
